It has been on the site of Ruthin Gaol in one form since the 17th century and prior to becoming the County Gaol it was used as a ‘holding area’ for those unfortunate to have committed crimes that warranted severe punishment. In 1866 the Gaol became a four storey Pentonville style building – helping to fit even more troubled men, women and children within its walls.
